Gilda's Club
News - May 2007
Magic 98 to
Host Three Day Concert for Gilda’s Club
Magic 98 (98.1 FM)
will present a Concert for Gilda’s Club, a three day event that
will air on Wednesday, June 6, Thursday, June 7 and Friday, June 8 from
7:00am to 7:00pm daily. This is the second time Magic 98 has held a
Concert for Gilda’s Club to help raise awareness and funds for
Gilda’s Club Madison Wisconsin. In 2006, Magic 98’s Concert for
Gilda’s Club raised more than $120,000.
Magic 98 and Gilda’s
Club Madison Wisconsin will work hand-in-hand in their efforts to raise
awareness and funds for the Gilda’s Club program and the construction of
the clubhouse. Groundbreaking is scheduled for autumn 2007 with the
clubhouse scheduled to open in the summer of 2008.
Barry Alvarez,
University of Wisconsin Athletic Director and Gilda’s Club Madison
Wisconsin Capital Campaign Co-Chair, along with his wife Cindy, will
kick-off the concert as guest DJs. During the 36-hour event, Barry will
be joined by Cindy, Chair of the Board for Gilda’s Club Madison
Wisconsin, Magic 98 on-air talent, and other celebrities to host the
concert which will feature live cuts of music, listener stories, and
experiences.
Magic 98’s Concert
for Gilda’s Club is one of our signature events for 2007. "Magic 98
has been great," said Cindy Alvarez. "We are very thankful for their
continuing support and talent."
"These are exciting
times," said Sara Sinaiko, President and CEO of Gilda’s Club Madison
Wisconsin. “This fundraiser is crucial to building the clubhouse and
offering our free program to anyone touched by cancer.”
Volunteers Needed—As
one of our primary fundraisers for this year, we need the support of our
volunteers and encourage you to be a part of the Magic 98 Concert for
Gilda’s Club. For planning purposes, we would greatly appreciate
your input and potential availability as soon as possible. Contact us at
volunteer@gildasclubmadison.org or 608/273-8880.
- Incentive
Coordinator. Two volunteers are needed to assist in coordinating
the incentives that will be offered for pledges or donations during
the Magic 98 Concert for Gilda’s Club; assist in contacting
businesses who have offered incentives in the past, as well as
soliciting support from local businesses to provide gift
certificates, merchandise, and apparel; assist the Post Broadcast
Team to package and ship incentives. Initial incentives have been
identified; however, assistance in coordinating the logistics of
this project is needed. The ideal person would have established
relationships with local retail businesses and have strong
communication and organizational skills.
- Radiothon
Phone Volunteers. Approximately 90 volunteers are needed to help
answer phone lines at Magic 98 during the three-day concert.
Volunteers with great phone skills are needed to assist in answering
listeners’ calls and collect contact and pledge information.
Volunteers from last year’s event have said that the experience was
very rewarding. Food and beverages will be provided by Magic 98 and
local restaurants. Attire is casual. Volunteers are needed each of
the three days from 7:00am to11:00am; 11:00am to 3:00pm; and 3:00pm
to 7:00pm. Volunteers should arrive 15 minutes prior to your
scheduled time for a brief training overview. Contact us at
volunteer@gildasclubmadison.org or 608/273-8880.
- Post
Broadcast Follow-Up. We are very excited to have the support of
the Madison Junior Woman’s Club to assist in sending out follow-up
letters to those who pledged or donated during the Magic 98
Concert for Gilda’s Club. Five volunteers are needed to provide
support to the efforts of Madison Junior Woman’s Club, and to assist
in follow up correspondence, incentive distribution and mailings.
This is a key activity to ensure that individuals who contributed
receive their incentives and are recognized and thanked for their
generous donations. Volunteers will work at the Gilda’s Club Madison
Wisconsin offices, 3000 Cahill Main, Suite 201, Madison, WI on
Thursday, June 21 from 8:30am to 12:30pm and/or Thursday, June 28
from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. If you can help, please contact us at
volunteer@gildasclubmadison.org or 608/273-8880.
As in the past,
the outpouring of your volunteerism is key to the success of this
worthwhile event. The gift of your time will ensure that this
fundraiser will achieve its goals, and the donations raised will
help build the clubhouse and maintain its program. We’d like to
thank Kim Francour, the Event Project Manager for Magic 98’s
Concert for Gilda’s Club. Kim is a volunteer and has put in
many, many hours working with everyone to plan and coordinate this
special event to ensure its success. We’re also thankful to Amy
Nickles, our Events Coordinator (as well as our Volunteer
Coordinator) for all of her help.
Google Internship is
Rare Opportunity
Wisconsin alumni and friends had a chance to make a
summer internship opportunity come true for a University of
Wisconsin-Madison student by bidding on a Google advertising
internship.
This is only the second time that
Google has provided an item such as this for a charity auction.
The internship offered by Google
received a winning bid of $8,200. Proceeds go to Gilda’s Club
Madison Wisconsin. It was offered on the Wisconsin Alumni
Association’s Big Badger Auction,
www.uwalumni.com, and was won by Jan Eddy. Jan asked that it be
named the Dr. Bob Pricer Internship.
Google has offered a paid-eight-week
summer internship at Google in advertising sales. It will be awarded
to applicants who submitted, by April 16, a resume and a cover
letter explaining what an internship of this nature would mean to
their educational goals.
The successful applicant will learn
about search advertising and Google’s business by working with a
field sales team in one of Google’s North American
offices—preferably New York, Chicago, Mountain View, Irvine or
Atlanta. A scholarship committee was scheduled to select a student
by May 1.
Gilda’s Glee Club
Join Gilda’s Glee Club at their
rehearsals, scheduled for Sunday, May 6, 13, 20 and 27th.
All rehearsals are from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
and held at the Unitarian Church, 900 University Bay Drive, Madison, WI.
What a Great Idea!
Recently we received a donation from employees of the UW-Madison
Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the Center for Molecular Virology,
two research centers on the UW-Madison campus.
Staff members who contributed included
John Bade, Linda Bingham, Tanya Cobb, Chris Gradel, Anne Habel, Michelle
Holland, Maureen Nelson, Leanne Olds, Angela Studnicka, Kim Voss, and
Kathleen Wessels.
They wrote the following note:
Our joint staff agreed two years ago
that during the winter holiday season, rather than buying everyone
individual gifts, we wanted to all contribute towards a gift to a
charity or organization that made a difference in the lives of others,
and was in need of financial support.
We choose Gilda’s Club Madison
(Wisconsin) for our holidays’ 2006 organization because two of our own
staff members (and contributors towards this donation) are breast cancer
survivors.
We selected an organization that they
both felt helped people diagnosed with cancer and their families.
This donation is in recognition of their courage and sense of humor in
the face of cancer and of the daily positive impact they have on all of
the people in our two centers.
Volunteer Help Wanted: Filing
Help needed filing important office documents, letters, and anything
else that needs to be organized. Would prefer someone with office
experience but would be happy to train the right person. Should enjoy
working independently with little guidance or assistance.
Need someone who can come in during
regular business hours, Monday thru Friday. There is plenty of work for
someone to help twice a week for an hour or two, or once a week for a
few hours. Flexible.
Please contact Anita at
info@gildasclubmadison.org
or 608/273-8880.
