One step closer to "Opening the Red Doors"

Contractors, architects, blueprints, design elements, meeting after meeting; the last year has been really busy with the planning stages of the new Gilda’s clubhouse. Now we are ready to break ground and celebrate all the hard work that has brought us to this milestone.

On Tuesday, October 9 we will celebrate with a groundbreaking ceremony on the actual site of the clubhouse. Supporters and friends are invited to join us as we recognize those that have helped us get to this point and to celebrate moving one step closer to "Opening the Red Doors."

We Are Not Done Yet
By Heidi Green, Director of Development
Gilda’s Club Madison Wisconsin

With groundbreaking just weeks away, the vision of Gilda’s Club Madison is quickly becoming a reality! This project is on its way to success because many people in our community have already invested in Gilda’s Club by making a donation to help us open the Red Doors. We truly appreciate this support.

As we move into the next phase, construction, we want the community to know that we are still in need of financial support. Before we open the doors, we are determined to raise an additional $1.3 million to complete the campaign and support our operating budget. Remember, Gilda’s Club is a FREE non-profit. We do not charge our members for any services, so community support is vital for the success of Gilda’s Club.

When you make a gift to Gilda’s Club you are investing in your community. You are allowing people; your family, your friends, your neighbors, anyone living with cancer, to have a place where they can be with others who understand, a place where they don’t have to be alone.

Please consider making a donation to Gilda’s Club Madison now. Now couldn’t be a better time. We would love your support of this wonderful community effort.

To make a gift, please visit our website at www.gildasclubmadison.org and click on “You Can Help” or return the gift card on the back of this newsletter with your check.

In-Kind Donations Essential to Building Clubhouse
By John Karcher, Volunteer, Gilda’s Club Coordinator, In-Kind Donations

I’m sitting on a charter flight loaded with badger fans heading from Madison to Las Vegas, and it’s striking to me how different this is compared to regular commercial travel. An hour ago, we were complete strangers…now, we’re all fans on the same team and quickly becoming friends.

I get the same feeling several times a week as the Gilda’s Club team huddles. We come together and face strangers ready to join our team to bring a Gilda’s Club to the greater Madison area.

We are blessed to live in such a vibrant city with great health care facilities, the HospiceCare Center, Ronald McDonald house and soon….a Gilda’s Club. Yes, very soon!

For the past two years, Cindy and Barry Alvarez have poured their heart and soul into telling us how beneficial a Gilda’s Club would be to the Madison area. They created a team, now headed by Chief Executive Officer, Marcia Whittington, and we are in the red zone....er, construction zone.

This past week, we met with construction companies from Southern Wisconsin, who are studying initial plans for site development, like earth moving, concrete work, etc.

What we found is not one but many willing to help in Phase One which kicks off in late September prior to our official groundbreaking on October 9.

I’ve spent two years on the “team” and I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to see so many helping so much. Flad & Associates took our ideas and for months worked the Gilda plan. Now, Planning Design Build is quarterbacking the project and has come up with a Gilda’s clubhouse that will be truly magnificent!

It is simply amazing how Flad and now Planning Design Build have taken our ideas and put them on paper.

Most significant is Planning Design Build’s efforts to completely manage this project through our Grand Opening .

Many of you have already expressed a willingness to help by donating materials or labor. As our process and project evolves, be assured we will contact you and let you know when we would like your donation on site.

I, or a member of the in-kind donation team, will also be contacting companies throughout the Gilda’s service area to see if they, too, would like to help. I must say, our needs are great.

While I’ve never built a home, it’s exactly what Gilda’s Club Madison Wisconsin is doing. It will be about 15,000 square feet. Imagine the door knobs, counter tops, flooring, ceiling, drywall, kitchens, landscaping, lighting, carpet, furnishings and all the skilled labor needed to put it together.

It is a daunting task but I can tell you everyone realizes the great need for a Gilda’s Club and it will get done.

In the very near future, we will have a tremendous need for local Labor Unions to get involved. Electricians, plumbers, masons, carpenters and others. Please consider using your expertise and donating your time over the next few months.

If your labor organization would like to get involved, please contact us at 608/273-8880 or info@gildasclubmadison.org or www.gildasclubmadison.org.

We are building a lasting legacy to serve thousands every year — those touched by cancer.

To those that have poured their resources into Gilda’s Club Madison Wisconsin, and to those who most certainly will, we thank you so very much!

Let’s Open those Red Doors.
