Noogiefest at Gilda’s Club celebrates 17 years of Halloween fun

You enter the iconic red doors to find yourself transported into outer space. The sounds of giggles and little superheroes, princesses, Pikachus, and teddy bears pass you by. You can make your own moon sand or planet, go on a scavenger hunt, or eat some festive goodies. It must be Noogiefest!

Noogiefest has been a tradition at Gilda’s Club Madison since we opened our red doors. In fact, this year will be the 17th Noogiefest! Why is Noogiefest such a long standing tradition? “It’s an opportunity for the community and kids in particular to come together and enjoy each other’s company,” shares Kirsten Norslien, Program Director.

For the past several years, Noogiefest has been sponsored by the Levy Giving Fund. We are incredibly grateful for their support in making this fun event possible.

From outer space to under the sea

Noogiefest intentionally leans into the fun aspects of Halloween, instead of the spooky ones. “The kids we are working with have enough scary in their lives,” Kirsten explains. For some, this may be their one Halloween celebration for the year. It is a way for families to celebrate in a safe space and be around other families who are facing similar challenges. “It echoes back that they’re not alone,” Kirsten continues.

Each year has a different theme, like “Enchanted Forest,” “Willy Wonka,” and “Heroes.” During the pandemic, we even had a drive-through Noogiefest. Last year, we were in “Outer Space,” and this year’s theme is “Under the Sea” complete with ocean-themed crafts and activities.

Each year is unique

One of the key partners in making Noogiefest possible is the Edgewood College Child Life Association. The students create the crafts and activities, help plan the decorations, and more. In fact, Gilda’s Club Program Manager Elizabeth Kunz’ first involvement with Gilda’s Club was as an Edgewood Child Life  student at Noogiefest in 2013.

Now, things have come full circle, and Elizabeth coordinates the planning of Noogiefest as a Gilda’s Club staff member. For Elizabeth, a highlight of Noogiefest is getting to see the creativity from both attendees and the volunteers who help plan the event. “Each year is unique,” she explains. “New ideas are implemented. And that’s really fun to see.”

We are so thankful to our other community partners who help make Noogiefest possible, such as “A Moment of Magic” at UW.

This year’s NoogieFest will be held on October 16th from 6:00-7:30 pm. It is free and open to the public. Visit the registration page for more info and to sign up!
